Welcome to our October update!
Feeding hens in Autumn
The right type of diet for your flock is really important at this time of year, especially as the days shorten. There are two main reasons for this.
Chickens will ‘moult’ at this time of year. This means they will lose some feathers and then grow a beautiful set of new ones. In order to make this as easy on the chicken as possible it is important that they have a diet high in protein.
Maintaining a fresh supply of eggs can be done throughout autumn and winter. Hybrid laying hens will happily lay eggs all year round, but the combination of a poor low protein diet combined with shorter days will mean egg numbers will fall or stop altogether.
Here are some tips to help achieve this high protein diet.
- Feeding layers pellets is always a good start as this is about 16% protein. Don’t mix this with grains which can be a lower in protein.
- Add in other high protein items into the diet. Mealworms are great for this.
- Cut back a little of the treats, scraps or too many veggies. I wouldn’t suggest cutting them out altogether, but if they eat too many they will not eat the higher protein foods.
