Note: Mistakes made during the rearing/growing period of a hens life (the first 16 to 18 weeks) can never be rectified.  At Farm Fowl, we are focused on rearing our hens especially for the garden poultry keeper or medium size flock owners in a free range environment.   Part of this rearing technique involves moving our birds outside to grass pens as soon as possible, as after all the outdoor environment is what they are been reared for.  This allows the birds to grow strong and to develop healthy immune systems.  This helps them to become strong, robust and importantly trouble free hens if cared for well.

Some tips on caring for your hens

Proper handling of laying hens will ensure that they are docile hens for your garden.  This is especially important right from day old and something we pride ourselves on.

Good quality poultry housing will ensure they have safe and have the right environment for egg laying and roosting at night.  Good ventilation in the hen house is important.

Feed laying hens correctly to help ensure they lay the optimal amount of eggs and of the highest quality.  Be careful not to feed foods that you are not sure if they are suitable for the hens as this can lead to problems.

Hens are prone to worms just like other animals.  This is no big deal as long as preventative worming routine is part of your chicken care routine.  There are various products for worming hens available and we can advise you on this.  A lot of these products just get mixed into the feed or water.  This helps the hens lay better.

Hens can be susceptible to mites and lice.  When you purchase your birds from Farm Fowl they will be mite and lice free, but just like with worming it is important that you have a preventative care routine.  This is very straight forward and easily done.  Hens with lice or mites will lay less and can be prone to other problems.

Clean water all the time makes sense for both the hens and you.  It is after all a big ingredient in a hens egg making process, which at the end of the day you will be eating.  It also is very important to ensure the hen remains healthy.  Use of a good quality poultry drinker helps to make this easier and we have a range of these in stock along with feeders and other accessories.
